Career Exploration at Chesapeake Middle School: A CTE Best Practice
Chesapeake Middle School partners with Collins Career Technical Center to provide career exploration for all students in grades 6–8 through the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway course.
Using a rotating nine-week model, students participate in a Career Exploration course during one period of the school day while rotating through gym, art, and wellness throughout the year. This approach ensures equitable access to career-connected learning for all students and supports early exposure to career pathways—recognized as a best practice in middle school career technical education. The model has proven successful at Chesapeake and has been replicated in other middle schools across the county.

Career Connected Learning Spotlight
PortfoliOH is a FREE, statewide, student-centered digital platform available to all Ohio school districts. It helps students document, reflect on, and showcase their career-connected learning experiences over time. Through PortfoliOH, students can build a personalized portfolio that captures work-based learning, career exploration activities, credentials, skills, and artifacts that demonstrate their growth and readiness for future education and workforce opportunities.
PortfoliOH supports Career Connected Learning by encouraging student voice, reflection, and ownership—while providing educators and partners with a meaningful tool to connect learning experiences across classrooms, programs, and pathways. As districts continue to expand career awareness, exploration, and preparation opportunities, PortfoliOH provides a powerful (and free!) way to help students make sense of their experiences and tell their own career story.
